We are former Fairburn parents who are now at Emerson. My daughter and her friends are having the time of their lives in Drama, which has bonded her class over the past three years into a very close and mutually supportive group of friends.
Middle school is a big change...you move from a single elementary teacher to several middle school teachers. The amazing thing about Emerson's teachers is that they really KNOW the kids in their class. You go to a parent teacher conference and they'll say...yes, she got this or that right but she didn't seem to understand X and (this is the important part) HERE IS HOW TO HELP HER and WHAT I AM DOING FOR HER.
The SAS/IHP is not a slamdunk. There are some teachers who will insist on detail and perfection. This is hard for some of the smarter Fairburn and Westwood Charter kids who are used to getting straight A's without breaking a sweat. It's surprising and exciting when your child LIVES UP to the challenge. My kid was one of only 7 kids in her grade last year (300plus kids) who got straight As.
The teachers are available after school and at lunch to tutor. Free. on demand. Imagine! They WANT every child to succeed and put their own time out there. Lots of teachers are present at parent and after school meetings. We have had only one teacher who wasn't terrific. (He left last year.)
Some years you have a very low class size (18 one year) and the next high (32) depending on (usually Warner) kids dropping out to go to private schools as they open up in 7th grade. What's interesting is that several of them came BACK from places like Harvard-Westlake and other middle schools because they missed Emerson and the drama or band programs.
Local parents...build your neighborhood. Don't stop volunteering just because it's middle school. Those who drop off their kid in front of the school and they worry what becomes of him all day do not set up their kid for success. Join the PTSA. Think up something you can do for your favorite teachers. Be part of the school and your child will see school as an extension of your home and feel comfortable. Continue developing social links on your own street which will pay off for years to come. Emerson is your school. Embrace it.
