I have student taught in a second grade class room at Komensky for the Fall 2007 season. I was extremely impressed with the staff and students. They implement a variety of teaching strategies but are very united. It's like a very down to earth big family environment. I was welcomed by all from the first day I attended this school. I learned about P.B.I.S. These are expectations that the children are fostered to follow in order to guide their daily discipline. They are rewarded and encouraged to follow rules like being safe, responsible, respectful as well as to take pride in their school and learning environment. This in return builds a sense of wanting to be there trying you best and motivates the students to follow the expectations. They are rewarded weekly based on a random drawing of tickets the students earn from all staff at Komensky. The custodian might just be walking by or cleaning the hall but, as he does he observes the students behavior in the hall and hands them a Golden Ticket they place outside the classroom to show that their goal is being met. It is very satisfying to those of us who give the tickets as well as to the student who receive them. The students are constantly rewarded and reminded of the expectations for simply following safe and courteous behaviors. It is so spectacular to see Principal LaSalle in a noisy assembly hall with more than 300 attending. She raise her hand and with this soft sweet voice says "High Five Komensky" and like magic silence all around." It is stunning to see the magic of a well established guidance and discipline policy. The staff has a team that meets weekly to assure that all classes are meeting the expectation or goal for the month. There are targets posted trughout the school to remind students that we have to get to the target wich will be a great big Fiest at the end of the year. The students and staff at Komensky are working on these expectation as well as many othe exciting learning experiances on an ongoing basis. I will miss everyone but am very greateful to have been placed to student teach in such a nutruting learning environment. I higly recommend this school.
