I graduated from Pike High School in 1988. Overall I am very happy with the education that I received there. Certain department areas had strengths and others had weaknesses when I was there. Biology was very well taught. In fact, when I went to college I was far advanced on that subject compared to students who had come from other high schools. However, mathematics at Pike was weak. At that time a teacher who taught algebra openly admitted in front of our class that he actually was not an algebra teacher but that he had made a deal to teach that subject until he could get a position teaching in another field. It showed. He talked about his personal life during most classes and then he sent us home with homework without explaining how to do it. Another algebra teacher spent more time trying to humiliate students in class than actually teaching them. I was an excellent student in every subject except math (probably in large part to the teachers that I just described). Since I didn't get better than a C in my math classes I was not allowed to be an honors student in any other class, even though I got As in those. I still think that was unfair. However, all of these things happened a long time ago so I would check into how things are run at Pike today. The school has grown immensely since I went there. The building has been added onto in order to accomodate the larger number of students. My nephew recently graduated from there and he has told me that there are a lot of gang problems there now. If you or your child will be going there then I would recommend being proactive. Find out for yourself if there is a gang situation. Most teachers are probably very good. However, ask questions, and don't put up with instructors who are not teaching well. If you are a student and a teacher isn't doing his or her job adequately then immediately ask to be transferred to another teacher's classroom (preferably at the beginning of the semester). That is what I should have done when I was a student but I didn't know any better. Having mentioned the negative, I want to leave by saying that generally I am very happy with the overall education at Pike High School as it was when I was there.
