What can I say? There is no better school around than Van Buren Elementary in my book. I grew up in Hamilton and I attended Van Buren from the second grade through the sixth grade. On of my favorite memories I have and often think about is when I used to stay after school and play in the gym. We would jump on the trampoline, tumble on the mats and just be ourselves. I still can smell the popcorn in the air. I loved all of my teachers and it's hard to say who was my favorite. If I had to choose though, I would say Mrs. Helen Rizer and Mr. John Anderson.
I also remember the day JFK was shot. I was sitting in the very front seat of the third row over from the classroom door. MRs. Andrew next door, came running over to tell Mrs. Rizer the news.
I was in third grade and Mrs. Rizer was reading my favorite book of course, Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. By the way, I still have the book that my mom and dad bought for me then. How i miss those times at Van Buren. However, we all must grow up to be adults but I think I still have that little girl in me that loved this school.
Today, I am a journalist and a published author of children's books. I hope to one day visit Van Buren again and com to read to the children. The title of my book is Doozy the Lonely Firefly.
I will always remember Mr. Johnson,(the principal then) and all of my teachers and friends.
Thank you Van Buren for giving me a lifetime of fond and beautiful memories. I cannot recall any negative event with me when I attended there.
To the student who go there now, enjoy every moment and learn all you can. It will pay off one day when you grow up.
God bless all,
Charlotte
