Current business and technology conditions that complicate effective application of business analytics to business intelligence and knowledge management data, and the prospects for improvement Businesses have collected data for many years. Most of the data they collect has been for historical purposes, such as how much of an item has sold and what are the profits gained from those sales. Business intelligence allows one to take that data, manipulate as you see fit and generate reports. The data then has to be extracted and trends analyzed so that businesses can find more opportunities and new customer segments. This is known as business analytics. This is the cloud, social, mobile, and information phenomenon that is coming together and changing technology as we use it today, considered the new generation of information technology. As businesses evolve they have to consider how they will handle this new technology. An advantage to CSMI is that it empowers businesses by allowing employees to access corporate data from anywhere and improve communication through collaborative tools. The disadvantage is that companies IT departments are overwhelmed by security, compliance, and rapid change. Just as a personal user of social media such as Facebook, mobile user such as iPhone, and cloud computing, I can see the rapid pace of change.
Business leaders often see the value in new technology before the IT department can harness it. These technology developments are happening to the workplace regardless of IT controls put in place. Social computing is allowing collaboration, and a shift of behavioral patterns of users and the communities in which they work. The cloud is providing a new way for businesses to deliver their products and reduce on-premise IT systems. A wide selection of mobile devices offer new access channels to applications and data. The combination of cloud, social computing and mobility can be used to increase geographic diversity and raise the productivity of
