Physical activity is important to the short term and long term health and well being of children. In the short term physical activity helps children to build muscle, develops the skeletal frame, develops the heart and lung function and helps to prevent obesity. If children have enough physical activity a day which is said to be up to an hour it can help the children get to sleep easier and for longer periods of time, this can then lead onto long term benefits as if the activity is in the garden it will also help the child to build up a good immune system so they will be less likely to fall ill to the common cold or the flu. Indoor environment- In my setting the indoor environment supports children’s physical activity and movement skills in various ways. It is split up into different rooms for different age groups. The babies have various rooms that they can play in so the younger ones who aren’t able to move themselves are able to be helped and the older babies are able to have a space where they can walk or crawl around happily without them running into the other babies.
There is then a tots room which is big enough for 9 children and then the toddlers have their own space which is much larger so they have the space to run without hurting others. There is plenty of variety and age appropriate toys and resources in each room. The resources are chosen to help develop the children’s motor skills throughout their different ages. In the baby room they have a lot of sensory things for the babies to explore then as they come down into the tots room although there is sensory activities for the children there is not as many as the baby room as now they are getting older they need to explore different things so they can learn and progress. Each room has a creative corner so that the children can learn to grasp things and draw and express themselves, a home corner, dressing up and puppets to enable them to develop make believe play, numeracy areas with counting, puzzles, building and shapes.
