Last year, SUVs and minivans outsold conventional cars for the first time. However, the SUV is increasingly coming under attack for its fuel economy, emissions standards and safety record. Vehicle fuel efficiency across the US is now at its lowest level since 1980. When comparing the death rates in passenger vehicles with SUVs, cars are still safer than SUVs. New technology and redesign is helping to alleviate the death tolls. The death rate has gone down 30% in the past 10 years. Companies are gradually changing the SUV to make it safer. In 1999, federal SUV safety regulations require SUVs to meet the same requirements as cars. This includes dual front air bags and side impact standards.
