The ultimate goal of GSCM and GSC is to gain competitive advantage, reducing system cost, satisfying customers and its supply chain members, i.e. all stakeholders. Cooper, Lambert and Pagh (1997) explained supply chain management as a philosophy which is based on a concept that each firm in the supply chain not only affects the overall performance of the supply chain but directly or indirectly affects the performance of all the other supply chain members. There is no doubt that GSCM is playing an important role in the success of many firms which are operating in the modern era. As a result of global markets and productions facilities, consumer behavior, mass customization and complex supply chain networks have become uncontrollable and disposed to disruptions (Enyinda, Ogbuehi & Briggs 2008). But first, it’s important to understand the basic concept of supply chain management and application in today’s business world.
Does the concept of supply chain management has its significance in today’s business or is it merely a trend destined to die with other short lived buzzwords? This question can easily be answered by looking at those firms who have adopted this concept including Xerox, Hewlett Packard,
