We can then report to our supervisor to manage the person’s current thoughts in order to keep them safe, but a referral to another psychologist or counsellor can also be offered if it is beyond your current skills. If the situation involved harming others such as “my baby won’t stop crying so I shake it or hit it to shut it up!” In extreme circumstances like this a counsellor must first try to manage the situation in the session however it must be reported to the counselling supervisors so they can manage and assess the situation and then further report it to the best authorities that can handle this. If a client was displaying aggressive behaviour during the session, I would continue to remain calm to show the client that I am still in control. I would speak in a calm and firm voice without any emotional response and yelling at the client. I would ask them to sit down, and perhaps divert to an issue that brought out less of an aggressive response and deal with it later on.
