The US has a population of over 300 million people with over half that population being protestant Christians. The US form of government is a democratic republic which is based upon their constitution that was established in 1787. Despite being called a people’s republic China is a communist state with the Chinese Communist Party currently holding power. The US has an English common law legal system, while China has a civil law legal system (CIA World Factbook, 2008). China’s GDP in 2006 was $US10.21 trillion (News Xinhuanet, 2007) with an expected growth rate of 11.5 per cent for 2007 (World Bank, 2008). According to the World Bank’s chief economist Justin Lin, China will continue to maintain its high growth rate (World Bank, 2008). The US had a GDP of $13.13 trillion in 2006 with an expected growth rate of 2.2 per cent for 2007 (International Monetary Fund, 2007) and is nearing a recession.
SECTION 2.1 | CULTURAL DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES
In order to determine the cultural differences and similarities which exist between the US and China this report will now utilize a study undertaken by Geert Hofstede which developed five dimensions of culture on which national culture could be measured. By comparing the USA and China on these dimensions it will help to determine the cultural differences which exist between them. A table of the rankings achieved by each country and the world
