Primary, secondary and tertiary levels of Health Promotion
In excess of ten years, health promotion and prevention has been the main focus of healthcare professionals in general, but nurses in particular. Health promotion is “the art and science of helping people discover the synergies between their core passions and optimal health, enhancing their motivation to strive for optimal health and supporting them in changing their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health (Edelman & Mandle, 2010, p. 14). Tertiary preventions intercessions can be comparable to primary prevention, although the objective is contrasting. For instance, administering vaccinations is one intercession that can happen at both levels. Vaccination to protect a healthy person from catching a sickness or disease, is an illustration of primary prevention, at the same time, with tertiary prevention, it assists with oncology patients, decreasing their prospect of getting a new illness/disease that successively exacerbates their health condition. Oncology patients are already immuno-compromised, thus, flu vaccines, pneumonia vaccines and meningococcal vaccines are confirmed to capable of averting severe infections (Wiwanitkit, 2010). Once more, as a result of patients being at this level deal with continual as well as incurable sicknesses, the intention is to curb it, minimize approaching risk, elevate the quality of the life and extend the years of being alive.
There are likenesses between the three levels of health promotion and prevention, but additionally there are essential variations the nurse wants to recognize and put into use appropriately in real life scenarios. Nurses are the individuals that spend the greatest amount of time with patients, whether it is at learning institutions, medical centers, businesses, homes or hospitals.
