The rising need in society for meeting basic physical, emotional, and mental needs demands a greater visibility for the counseling profession that does not exist today. Understanding the definition of the concept of counseling as a professional identity empowers professionals going into this field. In addition to this understanding, there is a need for counselors to develop key characteristics in order to be effective. In various roles and functions, counselors serve in various settings such as schools, community, and private practice. Counselors work closely with students to ensure they are on track to graduate. They provide students with the list of core classes required for graduation and track their progress periodically. Students are taught time management skills, note taking, and other skills to help them be successful. They also work closely with students and families to ensure behavioral issues are resolved when they arise. Counselors serve an important role in helping schools achieve their overall goals as well as individual students’ goals. Another area of practice can be found on college campuses as college counselors where they perform similar duties as school counselors and assist students with vocational goal setting. Counselors work with new, existing, and returning students to ensure they are transitioning smoothly into the college system and have a fun experience in the process. They work with students to create clear academic goals as part of a larger action plan to complete graduation requirements in their desired field of study. Counselors will also address any social and behavioral problems inhibiting the student from achieving their academic and personal goals. At times, counselors may serve and act as a personal mentor taking into consideration the students’ feelings, emotions and goals.
