In this essay I will utilise the case of M.E. to explore the possible theoretical achievements the implementation of Transactional Analysis (T.A.) and Gestalt approaches might have facilitated. This awareness might have supported greater understanding of what was transpiring within each interaction with her sister and husband for example, as well as enabling her to decide consciously which ego state would be the most appropriate one to adopt at any given time; having gained awareness of which ego state she was functioning in at any time. For example, interactions between M.E. and her sister throughout childhood and into adulthood comprised her sister being intensely critical, over-bearing and judgemental of M.E. During the course of therapy, a diagnosis of the ego state/s in this case might have been possible through the observations of her vocabulary, tone, facial expressions, posture and breathing. Such indicators may have therefore resulted in conscious awareness of her ego state when interacting with her sister, with the subsequent possible outcome of creating and maintaining a healthier relationship.
