Holes Essay:

Intro:
In the Film Holes different filmic conventions are used to portray characters and construct atmosphere. The film is about a young boy named Stanley Yelnats who follows a journey like his great great great grandfather did. He was sent to Camp Green Lakes for a crime that he did not commit and when he arrived at camp he uncovered some of his family secrets. Techniques such as camera angles, sound effects and color constructs the characters and atmosphere in the film which creates the mood.These film codes are very important in the film as they help the viewer understand the story and conventions better.

This is showing that Mr Sir has been effected by everyone looking at him and he has gone out in rage. This shows a more sensitive side of Mr Sir to the viewer and makes the viewer think twice about Mr Sir’s true character and personality. By using technical and audio codes the viewer gets to learn more about Mr Sir’s true personality.

Body Paragraph 3: Atmosphere , 2 film codes ( Talk about the scene where they climb the mountain).
A courageous atmosphere is created in the film Holes in the scene where Stanley and Zero have just run away from Camp Green Lake. This atmosphere is created using different film codes. In this scene Stanley and Zero are climbing up the mountain, as they had just ran away from Camp Green Lakes. They had just ran out of water and food when Stanley saw ‘God’s thumb’ on the mountain and decided to climb up it like his great great grandfather was meant when the ‘curse’ started . This symbolises that Stanley is following his ancient family’s journey and writing his own page in his history. The effect this creates on the viewers is that the thumb has an important role in the story and it symbolises a journey that has already occurred but failed, that Stanley is trying to do again but succeed. It also shows the viewer that, this is the goal for Stanley and Zero to reach so they can be saved from the desert and reach their journey of getting to ‘God’s Thumb’.
