1. Determine the leadership style that Peter Vyas exhibited as he considered the group’s proposal and provide examples of his behavior.
Of the four leadership styles, participative, consultative, delegative, and directive, discussed in Lewis’ book Project Leadership, Peter Vyas exhibited a participative leadership style. I have a team of seven employees, all different ages, generations, personalities, and skill levels. When dealing with each as an individual, I have to use the leadership style that is most appropriate. One example is working with my new warehouse manager to get the warehouse cleared of surplus personal property. With his background very little direction was necessary, and I could use a more delegative style in that situation. On the other hand, there are directives that I give him that requires that I use a more directive style. Many of the management reports and reconciliations required monthly are different from what the new warehouse manager is familiar with; therefore, I have to train him to do them according to our departmental needs.
Another situational opportunity is during our weekly staff meetings. I will use the participative leadership style to include the entire team determining how we will handle a particular project that has been delegated to our section. Input from the frontline workers is valuable, because they are the ones doing the actual manual task day-in and day-out. They may have some insightful information that, as the manager, I am just unaware of. With this much diversity on my team, I have to be a situational leader to be effective and efficient.
With all my communications with my team, I am strait forward and honest with them. We come together as a team, and I give them as much information as possible, whether good, bad,
