Community Health Nursing Reflection
The role of the community health nurse in the participating family’s community is to focus on the health needs of the aggregate or group. Community health nursing refers to a systematic, comprehensive focus on wellness, health protection, and disease, and injury prevention for the population residing in a specific area. The nurse functions as advocate, case manager, consultant, health care provider, educator, and collaborator with other agencies for healthy outcomes of the entire community. Collaboration and development of a partnership with the county YMCA or local fitness center positively would impact the community in relation to the Healthy People 2020 obesity indicator. Group rates drastically discounted for joining and maintaining a membership at a health facility would attract individuals and family’s to participate in a healthy lifestyle of physical activity. The participating community has many options for outdoor activity during the warm weather months. Maintaining the level of activity essential for a healthy lifestyle in the winter months would continue at the health facility. The health club would increase their membership; receive free publicity to communities in the area regarding their promotion of healthy lifestyles.
The ability to develop satisfying relationships with individuals and groups from diverse cultural backgrounds involves the application of knowledge and skills from the biologic, physical, and social sciences as well as effective interpersonal skills. Nurses must acquire self-awareness of their own personal values and beliefs, and develop sensitivity to the beliefs and values of people from other cultures. This country is a melting pot of multiple cultures. People within a culture may have beliefs and values that differ.
