Introduction

The locality I have based my community profile on is Ardoyne. I feel that Ardoyne is familiar enough for me to carry out my research as I have lived here all my life. Although my project is based in Belfast city centre, we work with many groups and young people from the Ardoyne area. this would prove beneficial to myself as I would sometimes have already developed a relationship with the young people through community life.

I will firstly explore the community I have chosen by speaking to local people, using photographs, and recordings of my observations. I believe there’s a argument to say that a lot of these crimes go hand in hand with the consumption of alcohol. Living only minutes away from the two main night clubs that are based in the community, I see first hand the offences against people and criminal damage that goes on. I feel that it is also important to explore the levels of deprivation in Ardoyne as alcohol consumption and higher numbers of pubs in usually located in te more depreived areas.

The Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure 2010 (NIMDM 2010) was published in May 2010. The report identifies small area concentrations of multiple deprivation across Northern Ireland. The results for Ardoyne are shown below.On the Multiple Deprivation Measure ward level summary Ardoyne ward has an overall rank of 7 out of 582 wards. All wards in Northern Ireland are ranked, 1 being the most deprived and 582 the least deprived. Wards with ranks of 58 or less are in the top 10% most deprived wards in Northern Ireland, this means Ardoyne, with a rank of 7, is within the top 10% most deprived wards.
