My Progress as a Reader and Writer in English 20M
If I had a time travel machine, I would love to go back to our class’s first meeting. It was such a memorable day. I was so nervous that my first piece of writing seemed less than mediocre as I reflected on what I had written that day. While being happy that my name was randomly chosen to be added to the class, I was very scared of this class. The last time I wrote an essay was two years ago, and before this class I had forgotten how to write one. As I motivate myself to read more, I also want to improve my academic writing skills. I think reading and writing have a strong connection, and both are very important. If I did not know how to read critically, I would certainly have more difficulty with writing. As an English learner, I always set a specific goal in every English class I have: “I would learn to improve my writing weaknesses especially grammar and sentence structures.” As the semester has gone by, I have had the opportunity to achieve this goal. Before turning in the final drafts, I had a chance to look at my professor’s comments on the first drafts and correct my errors. One of the common grammar errors I had is using a wrong verb tense. For example, a sentence in essay one, I wrote: “I register for a free Word of the Day website where I can learn a new word every time I check my email.” I noticed that I made the same grammar error twice in the essay. In this particular situation, I learned to use the appropriate verb tense which is past tense to describe an event that already happened, so I corrected it: “I registered for a free Word of the Day….” Another common sentence structure mistake that my classmates and I have had this semester is the inappropriate use of commas and periods when using quotations.
