The Girls in Their Summer Dresses
Men like the way women look. Whether it is women on TV or in magazines, they seem to like to look at women. Is this common among all men to want to look at that girl in the cute dress or the tight jeans? Or maybe it’s only certain guys that have to stare at women as they pass. But what if the man looking is married? That certainly changes the innocence of the stare. In "The Girls in their summer dresses", by Irwin Shaw, Michael Loomis is a guy that likes to stare at women other than his wife. She constantly catches him looking at these women and she calls him out on it. He tries to reassure her that he loves her and is happily married but she isn't convinced. He acts as though its in his nature to look at women and there's nothing he can do about it. She tells him that his wanting to look at these women is immature. "That's a kid's feeling." She thinks that he shouldn't be still thinking this way because he's older now and has a wife. They've been together for awhile now and he should've already gotten past the adolescent stage in his life where he practically drools over women. "I've made a good wife, a good housekeeper, a good friend. I'd do any damn thing for you.", she tells him. What makes these women better than her, she asks herself. Michael's wandering eye makes Frances insecure because her husband is looking at women like he used to look at her but to Michael it's just an innocent stare. She doesn't understand why her husband would want other women when she's been so much to him. This is where she starts worrying that her husband wants to be free to go after these women. "Sometimes I feel I would like to be free." he tells her. But even though he has these urges, he still tells her "Don't be foolish.", reassuring her that he doesn't want to leave her.
Michael thinks his looking at other women is so natural that he has no problem telling his wife about it. After she tells him that he's having "kid feelings" his response is "Guess again, I'm older now, I'm a man getting near middle age, putting on a little fat and I still love to walk
