An Eventful Journey of Living on the Streets
Character traits shape the people we all are. For example, they help us face our fears through courage; they show us right from wrong through responsibility; and they show us who to believe in tough decisions through trust. Dana, the protagonist from Eric Walters’ Sketches, has a tough time learning how to show her traits. However, as a child on the streets Dana fights through many tough obstacles that enable her to become an optimistic, courageous and trusting individual.

As a result of this, when Dana is asked about going back to stay with her mother and sister she says, < “It wasn’t easy. I hardly slept at all. It just didn’t feel safe being in my room again (225).” > It took courage for Dana to go home, to stay in the place where memories of pain and suffering were made real again. She over M4 came her fear of her home and now she is able to reconnect with her mom and sister. In short, Dana becomes courageous when she went back to stay in a place that always caused her pain.
Dana endures many tough obstacles while on the streets, but these challenges have only helped Dana learns to become optimistic, courageous and trusting. She becomes optimistic about getting off of the streets; she faces her fears of going back home to become courageous; and she entrusts Nicki with the job of saving her sister from her abusive stepfather. This novel is a great example of a person who perseveres through their challenges to find the real happiness in their life. It is important to understand that despite all obstacles that people may face in life, a person can find true happiness and can always find the proverbial diamond in the rough if they want to.
